Claude vs ChatGPT — how they compare, and how to run either without a subscription
How Claude and ChatGPT stack up on reasoning, writing, context and price — and how to run either one without committing to a subscription.
Claude vs ChatGPT is mostly a question about temperament, not capability — both are frontier models, and the gap on raw benchmarks is narrower than the discourse suggests. What actually differs is how they behave on your work.
At a glance
| Claude | ChatGPT (GPT-class) | |
|---|---|---|
| Long-form writing | Often preferred — steadier voice | Strong, more variable in register |
| Instruction-following | Careful, literal | Strong, more willing to improvise |
| Long documents | A core strength | Strong |
| Ecosystem / multimodal | Narrower | Broader tooling and modalities |
| On Halo | Pay per prompt, no account | Pay per prompt, no account |
Where each one tends to win
Claude is the usual pick when the output is the deliverable — long-form prose, editing, careful work against a long brief or a big document. It follows instructions literally, which is a feature when the instructions are good.
GPT-class models are the stronger generalists, with more surrounding tooling and broader multimodal coverage. If your task spans formats or leans on the wider ecosystem, that breadth matters.
Neither answer survives contact with your actual prompts, which is the real argument for being able to run both cheaply.
The comparison is the point
Paying two subscriptions to find out which model suits you is a bad deal. On Halo both sit behind one sign-in: you pay per prompt in USDC on Base, send the same prompt to each, and compare the answers for the cost of those prompts. No account with either provider, no monthly plan, nothing to cancel.
Access is worth noting too — neither is offered everywhere. Halo is permissionless, so there’s no region check; see the notes for China, Hong Kong and Russia.

Frequently asked questions
Is Claude better than ChatGPT?
They trade places by task. Claude is often preferred for long-form writing, careful instruction-following and long-document work; GPT-class models are strong generalists with the broader tool and multimodal ecosystem. On any specific job the honest test is running your own prompts through both.
Do I need two subscriptions to compare them?
Not on Halo. Both sit behind one sign-in, and you pay per prompt in USDC on Base rather than a plan each. Comparing them costs the price of the prompts you send.
Which is cheaper?
Per token the two are broadly comparable, and both are cheaper on Halo than a fixed monthly plan if your usage is occasional. Because operators compete for each request, the price for a given model tends to sit at the low end.
Which is more private?
On Halo it's the same answer for both: your prompt is encrypted to the operator, confidential mode can seal it inside a hardware enclave (TEE) even the operator can't read, and every result carries a proof the real model ran. That's a stronger position than sending prompts to either vendor directly.
